Whole Pet Kitchen’s Supplement Grade Taurine powder is 100% human grade and is in powder form, making it easy to measure and mix with your pets’ food. What we love about taurine is that has an antioxidant effect that helps protect against ageing.
For cats, taurine is a necessary amino acid to be taken in through food for their brain, nerves, eyes, heart, digestion, immune function and fetal development. Cats will get very sick without enough taurine in their food.
As for dogs, taurine is useful for dogs for maintenance and prevention of heart conditions, kidney disease and for the eyes. In the recent years, dogs have been developing heart problems called dilated cardiomyopathy which can be caused by taurine deficiency. Although taurine-deficiency occurs primarily in cats, it may also occur in Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Newfoundlands, Dalmatians, Portuguese Water Dogs, and English Bulldogs. Taurine may also be effective for general heart disease.
Taurine has been proven effective for treating taurine-deficiency diseases and retinal degeneration. Limited studies have been performed regarding the use of taurine to treat general heart disease, but preliminary studies show taurine’s usefulness as an adjunctive therapy in these cases.
This supplement should take effect after 1-2 doses; however, it can take up to a few weeks before full effects are noted. Effects may not be visibly noticeable and therefore laboratory tests may need to be done to evaluate if the supplement is working.
Although taurine is found in our Grub diets at Whole Pet Kitchen, it may still be useful for pets to have the supplement to increase their chances of not having any deficiencies. Dosages vary but the usual dose for adult maintenance are as follows:
